How's it done?

 
 

Approximately 4.5 million poppies, 8,000 wreaths, thousands of wreath centre badges and other items are made here each year at Lady Haig's Poppy Factory. This is how....
 
 

Lapel & Stick-on Poppies

  
 
STAGE 1  
The poppy paper roll is passed through the cutting and pressing machine. The poppy petals are cut to size and the distinctive ribbing is added.
STAGE 2  
The petals are passed on to the team of poppy makers.
The green plastic stem is placed into the mounting holder, the preformed petal is placed onto the stem and secured with the black plastic centre insert.
For safety reasons the old style pin-attached poppies have been replaced by our stick-on poppies.

The above process is repeated until all 4.5 million poppies have been made
 
 
 

Long Stem Poppies & Remembrance Crosses

  
 
STAGE 1
The poppy silk fabric is passed through the cutting machine. The poppy petals are cut to size and the distinctive ribbing is added.
STAGE 2
The poppy is attached to the wire stem which is then wrapped in green paper.
 
   
REMEMBRANCE CROSSES

The poppy petals are whisked away to the tin room where they are attached to the small wooden crosses.
 
 
 

Wreaths

  
 
STANDARD WREATHS  
For our standard wreaths we use a pre-formed plastic wreath ring.
The petals used on the wreaths are the same as those used for the long stem poppies.
CUSTOM WREATHS  
We have many requests for custom wreaths, different sizes, shapes and poppy colours
For these wreaths we start by building a wire frame.
This is covered in foam and wrapped in green plastic.
The poppy petals are then arranged on the frame to cover the base.
The badges are attached to add the final touch to the wreaths
The badges themselves are handled by our Printing Dept.  
   
   
 
 
 

The Tin Room

  
 
Although not made by the factory, the collecting tins do still require maintenance.
Over 26 000 collecting tins are distributed around Remembrance time.
When collecting has been completed all of the tins are returned to the factory where they are cleaned, re-labelled and re-strung ready for distribution the following year.
This process can take around 4 months to complete.
